Steven Douglas Smith, 68, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. He was born on June 10, 1957, in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph Andrew Smith and Loretta Grace Smith, who both preceded him in death.
Steven was a proud United States Coast Guard veteran, serving from 1974 to 1977, including time stationed in Manhattan, New York, where he worked on Governors Island. He spent most of his life in Springfield, Missouri. He was a mechanic by trade and loved fixing and tinkering with everything from lawn mowers to motors. Over the years, he worked at Highland Springs Golf Course and Paul Mueller Company, where he took pride in his work and hands-on craftsmanship.
He could often be found with classic rock playing in the background, working on a project and bringing old things back to life. He also loved fishing, collecting antiques, and spending time with his dog, Buddy. Steven had a kind heart, a friendly nature, and a charismatic personality that drew people to him.
He is survived by his three children: Tiffany Pesce and her husband, David; Nathaniel Smith and his wife, Helena; and Michael Smith; his grandchildren, Marin and Makennah; his brother, Joseph A. Smith II; and his sister, Laura Cleo Sedoryk.
He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him, and forever held close in our hearts—loved “more than the whole wide world.”
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life… will be able to separate us from the love of God.” — Romans 8:38–39
