IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ronald
Garling
July 8, 1934 – April 22, 2025
On Tuesday April 22, surrounded by his family, Ron Garling of Springfield earned his wings and already the world feels less bright.
Ron led an extraordinary life compared to most. Born in Estherville, Iowa July 8th, 1934, then moved to Garner, Iowa where he grew up, living in a train depot with his mother Ruth and father Elmer Garling. He learned Telegraphy from his father at the age of 14, and upon graduating from High School became a Telegrapher and Brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad for a short time. He then joined the Army and served 3 years as a helicopter mechanic. Once out of the Army he moved to Mason City, Iowa and attended junior college, where he met his future wife Marlene, as they were neighbors. Over the next several years he went to school for accounting, finishing at SMS in Springfield, MO. He went on to become an IRS agent for the next 22 years, retired from the IRS, then worked for Jim Myers CPA for another 20 years before finally retiring. Ron had many hobbies. He obtained a pilot's license and flew Cessnas for fun. Ron spent many years as a Boy Scout Troop leader and shared his love of the outdoors with his family, taking them on numerous camping, floating, fishing, and snow skiing adventures. Ron loved to draw, specifically cartoons and caricatures. He dabbled in political cartoons but never submitted any even though he probably should have. Ron had a strong faith in the Lord, was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years and sang in the choir.
Ron was 90 years old and would have been married to Marlene for 67 years this coming November. He was a kind and gentle person, friend to many, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Our hearts are broken, but we know that this will heal in time. We are thankful for and will miss Dad's guidance and mentoring. Ron is survived by wife Marlene, sons Dean, Steve (Becky), daughter Ronda (Dan), son Cary, and daughter Dawn (Chris), 8 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Rest in Peace. Until we meet again.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
