Rod Berg's Obituary

Kenneth Rodney Berg passed away peacefully in his home on March 27, 2023.

Rod was born January 14, l941 on the family farm near Meadow Grove, Nebraska to Kenneth and Fern Wieting Berg. He spent his early years helping his parents on the farm, preparing for county and state fairs, 4H, and participating in all activities at Buffalo Creek church. After graduating from Newman Grove High School, he attended Wayne State Teachers College and University of Nebraska for short periods of time, eventually moving to Minneapolis, MN and beginning a career in credit and car finance. Rod retired as Chrysler Financial branch manager in Springfield, MO in 1995, but continued with Chrysler Financial on a contract basis for many more years.

Rod taught son Nick a love of the outdoors, to hunt and fish, dig post holes, and identify and eradicate thistles—some activities which were enjoyed very much, others not so much. Rod also had a very soft spot in his heart for grandsons Nate and Jake, and their father says the boys got away with much more than he ever did.

Rod, with his good friends Duane and Peter, spent many days hunting and fishing in Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska and Colorado. Their memories of those trips created more stories and much laughter. He worked hard, attributing that ability to having been raised on a farm where he learned what working hard meant, and he enjoyed living life to the fullest.

Rod was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church, serving on the Property Committee, helping to build the church extension walkway in the late l990s. He was also a member of the Southern Missouri Rangers, a single action shooting society, helping with the upkeep of the range and competing in the Ol' Coots and monthly shoots at Outlaw Range.

Rod is survived by Darla Sawyer Berg, his wife of 59 years; son, Nick; daughter-in-law, Anne; grandsons, Nathan and Jacob; sister, Beverly and her husband, Donavon Benson; brother, Robert and his wife, Nancy; and many nieces and nephews. Rod was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Bonnie Zinsmaster.

For those who wish to honor his memory, gifts can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Springfield, MO, The Southern Missouri Rangers, Marshfield, MO, or a charity of choice.
