Paul Byron Gumersell, 58, of Springfield, Missouri passed away at his home on Monday, December 10, 2018. Paul was born on July 8, 1960, in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Mercy High School and went on to study at The Broadcast Center.
Paul started out his early days in broadcasting as a radio announcer and went on to have an award-winning, 20-year career as a news anchor. He worked in television markets in Mobile, Alabama, Indianapolis, Indiana, Memphis, Tennessee, Evansville, Indiana, Toledo, Ohio, and Springfield, Missouri. In 2001, he made a career change and worked in medical communication sales for 14 years, taking an early retirement from Audio Acoustics, Inc. in Springfield, Missouri. No matter what career Paul was in, he was always hard-working and successful.
Paul was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. In his spare time, he had a passion for music and enjoyed singing and playing his guitar, reading, writing, cooking, and watching Alfred Hitchcock classics. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, World War II buff, and loved the beach! Paul adored German Shepherds and was a great dog trainer. He spent some time during retirement training his black German Shepherd, Panzer, who is now part of a K-9 team with the Dallas County Missouri Sheriff's Office. Paul is remembered as being intelligent, talented, witty, fun-loving, and passionate.
He is remembered with love by his sons, Richard (Lindsay) Gumersell of Toledo, Ohio, John Gumersell of Los Angeles, California, Robert Thomas Gumersell of Springfield, Missouri and mother, Lesa (Jeff) Voss of Springfield, Missouri; sister, Jill (Pierre) Papin of Farmington, Missouri; nieces, nephews, and dearest friend, Amy Lutzel of Evansville, Indiana.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Richard Gumersell of St. Louis, Missouri and John and Richard's mother, Sylvia Ann Gumersell of Toledo, Ohio.
A private service for the family was held on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Road, Springfield, MO with Rev. Thomas E. Reidy officiating.
