Michael Turner

September 5, 1953 — May 13, 2026

Springfield

Michael Eugene Turner (Mike) was born on September 5, 1953, to Jesse Paul and Dora May Turner in Abeline, KS. He passed away at home after a long and brave fight with small-cell neuroendocrine cancer on May 13, 2026.

Mike was a dedicated and devoted husband to Mary Catherine (Schneiter) for almost 42 years and an amazing father to his three beloved daughters - Jennifer Michelle Wilson (Jonathan), Sarah Marie Turner, and Emily Rae Turner (Kyle). His granddaughter Charlotte LouAnn Wilson thought her “Papapa” was the best, and he felt the same about her. He filled their lives with love and laughter and continuously demonstrated his selflessness in how he supported their dreams and passions (no matter how big or how small).

After his wife and girls, Mike’s brothers - John Turner (Carol) of Jenks, OK, Steven (Kelli) Turner of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Turner of Wichita, KS, and Gary (Kate) Turner of Springfield, MO - and his many nephews and nieces – were his favorite people to spend time with. He also had a special relationship with his sister-in-law Carol Maggart and was frequently amazed (if not overwhelmed) by his in-laws the Schneiter clan.

Not only did he bring his sarcastic humor and well-timed wit to many late-night card games, he was also always there for a quiet word of wisdom or a reassuring hug when the moment called for it. He tirelessly (and joyfully) captained the boat for time on the lake (his happy place), was begrudgingly beaten in fishing on more occasions than he would care to admit and was a texting machine during Iowa State Cyclone and Kansas City Chiefs games.

Known by many as Dr. T, Mike was an optometrist for over 40 years - where (though he wouldn’t brag about it) – he was adored by staff and patients for his kindness and commitment to care, and by colleagues and partners for his intelligence and commitment to excellence.

There are many more people and places who make up the full and wonderful life that Mike lived. Friends from his childhood in Newton, IA, fellow Canada adventurers from the Cosmopolitan Philanthropic Club in Wichita, KS, his friends from First Baptist Church of Wichita, KS all appreciated loyalty, and “up for anything” attitude.

Mike lived out his unassuming faith in Jesus by protecting and providing for his family and by generously and cheerfully serving others. He leaves a legacy of gentle strength, contented joy, and unending love. He will be forever and deeply missed.

Mike preferred not to be the center of attention, so a simple memorial will be hosted by his family on Thursday, May 28 from 1-2:30pm at the Springfield Lake Park and Boathouse (2312 Lake Springfield Park Rd, Springfield, MO 65804). Casual attire is preferred for this come-and-go event. There will be a short presentation about 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mike’s name to Gift of Adoption (https://giftofadoption.org/donate/) or to Biker’s Against Child Abuse (https://bacaworld.org/missouri/).

Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
