Obituary

Michael E. Klem Jr., 73, of Springfield, Mo passed away on May 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 12, 1952, in Millville, NJ, Michael lived a life rooted in education, agriculture, family, and lifelong curiosity.

Mike was the beloved son of Michael Sr. and Ann Klem, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his uncle, John Klem, Aunt Docia Nayda, Uncle Bohdan “Shorty” Nayda and Jerry Massie.

He is survived by his sister, Patti Sheppard and her husband Scott; his children, Michael Klem III, Marshall Klem, and Anna Eley and her husband Lance Eley; his cherished grandsons, Hays and Holland Eley; and special cousins Bill Nayda and his wife Lynn, and Dale Massie. He is also survived by Michelle Klem, with whom he shared their children and many family memories. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives he impacted deeply.

Mike dedicated much of his professional life to education and agriculture through his work with the Darr College of Agriculture at Missouri State University. He cared deeply for his students and found great purpose in helping others learn, grow, and pursue their passions. His love for agriculture, education, and mentorship left a lasting impression on countless students and coworkers over the years.

Mike had a passion for cutting and reining horses, gardening, travel, agriculture, 4-H, and lifelong learning. He especially loved reminiscing about his childhood on Fairton Road, memories that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He was also a proud alumnus and devoted supporter of Texas A&M University, carrying his love of education, tradition, and Aggie spirit throughout his life.

You could almost always find Mike with a camera in hand, capturing moments both big and small. Through his photography, he preserved memories of family, friends, travels, and everyday life — a reflection of the way he truly saw and appreciated the world around him.

Above all, Mike loved his family. He will be remembered for his wisdom, storytelling, curiosity, kindness, and the genuine care he showed to those around him. His legacy lives on through the many people he taught, mentored, photographed, and loved.
