IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mac Mccoy
Jr.
November 25, 1940 – October 17, 2020
Harold Lee "Mac" McCoy, Jr. was born November 25th, 1940, in Atchison, Kansas. He passed away on October 17, 2020 in Springfield, Mo, where he lived, worked, and grew a family.
Mac is survived by his son, Scott McCoy and his wife Lisa, his daughter Kris McCoy, and his son Stephen McCoy and his wife Angela.
Mac had several grandchildren, including our beloved Jordan McCoy, who preceded him in death. Mac's living grandchildren include Jessica Hodge, Keaghan Economon, Lochlan McCoy, Elka McCoy, Finnegan McCoy and Josh Norris.
Mac was the only son of Harold Lee McCoy, Sr. and Willetta Ward McCoy. Mac's only sister, Sandra Goettel, passed away in 2015. From very early in his life, Mac found wonder in art and creativity. He never lost his passion for those things and he always sought to share them with others. Mac crafted pottery, enjoyed photography, and also created pen and ink renderings of nature. Our memories of him will forever dwell in the treasured pieces he left behind
As a young man, Mac crafted his talent for art into a high school teaching position. He received a Bachelor's degree from Drury University in 1963 where he was also a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and earned a Master's degree from Western Kentucky University in 1969.
Mac devoted his life to serving as an educator and beyond being a classroom teacher, he performed other roles including a high school principal and in special education administration. Eventually, Mac accepted a position with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Office of Special Education. His knowledge of special education services and law was encyclopedic. Mac was a tireless advocate for students with disabilities. He left special education services in Missouri in a better state than before he arrived.
To his delight, he passed on his fondness for art and education to his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by family and friends.
