Lloyd Newell Bales, 71, of Springfield, MO went home to be with The Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, MO. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 24, at 11:30 a.m. at James River Church - Clark Chapel, Ozark, MO with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services, Springfield, MO.
Lloyd was born in Denver, CO to Russell Lloyd Bales and Dorothy Mae (Newell) Bales.
On December 26, 1994, Lloyd married his best friend and love of his life, Beth, was his, "everything."
Lloyd served our country as an E5 Photographer's Mate with the United States Navy from January 1966-January, 1970. Mr. Bales was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. While he was stationed at the Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, CA. Lloyd traveled and served in Thailand, Viet Nam and Guam. He loved this country and was a true Patriot.
After his military service, Lloyd attended Bible Baptist College and received a Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies. He answered the calling of The Lord to preach and was a Pastor, Teacher and Biblical Scholar. Lloyd loved God and served him faithfully until his death. Lloyd and Beth attended James River Church, Ozark, MO since 1999.
Lloyd returned to college and earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Master's degree in Special Education. Lloyd taught school in Dora, Buffalo, Bolivar and Springfield, MO. He retired in 2012 after teaching his last 11 years at Great Circle (formerly Boys and Girls Town of Missouri). He continued to substitute teach for Springfield Public Schools. He thoroughly enjoyed educating children and had a special place in his heart for kids with special needs. Students loved the way that Mr. B would find and utilize the most fun and interesting strategies to help them develop a love of learning.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 22 years, Beth of Springfield, MO and their five children: Kristie (Bales) Vandeventer and husband Gary, Bloomfield, IN; Jami (Green) Cook and husband Curt, West Plains, MO; Travis Bales, West Plains, MO; Joey Green and wife Kassie, West Plains, MO; and Jennie (Green) Brown and husband Garrett, Willard, MO. Lloyd and Beth were blessed with 19 grandchildren: Danielle (Bringelson) Lifford and husband Bryan; Cory Vandeventer and wife Brittany; Justice Bales; Zane Vandeventer; Ryan, Taylor and Matthew Newell Vandeventer; Eli, Zoe and Ayn Cook; Maddox, Gibson, Brody and Liam Brown; Kinley and EJ Green; Kaylee Kack, Adam and Avelynn Fraser and one great-grandson, Karter Bryce Lifford. He also leaves behind his mother, Dorothy (Newell) Bales, Willow Springs, MO; his mother-in-law, Eleanor Upton, Springfield, MO; two sisters, Edith Wood and husband Neil, Willow Springs, MO; and Mary Warren and husband Steve, West Plains, MO; Nieces and nephews: Tim Wood; David Wood (Angie); Cheryl Nottle (Mike); Sheila Cloud (Steve); Sam Warren (Kim); Elizabeth Love (Jeff); one cousin, Sharon Barr (John); his "brother," Jim Weiss and Charlene Fraser, who called him, "Dad!"
Mr. Bales was preceded in death by his father, Russell Bales; his paternal grandparents, Andrew and Alma Bales; his maternal grandparents, Frederick Benjamin and Esther Newell; many aunts and uncles, including his special "Auntie" Maxine McComas and two cousins who were like brothers, Tom and Rich McComas.
One of Lloyd's greatest joys in life was spending time with those who called him, "Papa!"
Lloyd was the biggest jokester and loved telling riddles and jokes. He enjoyed his H.O. scale train set, Westerns, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, and movie dates with his wife.
Lloyd leaves a legacy of love, faith and service. He greatly loved studying and sharing The Bible. He loved God with all his heart and made it his main purpose in life to positively impact the lives of others. His desire was that all would have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and one day celebrate with him in Heaven. The greatest gift he gave was to make sure his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends had 100% certainty they'll see him again in Heaven if they've accepted Jesus! (Romans 8:38-39)
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory/honor to Gideons, International.
The family wishes to thank his many friends, as well as the Greene County First Responders, Dr. Juarez, Dr. Kim and the Critical Care ICU nurses and techs at Mercy Hospital, for their excellent care of Lloyd. The family also appreciates Ron and Missy at Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services, for their compassion and care for Lloyd and his family.
