Obituary

Laurel Ann McKean, 51, of Springfield, MO passed away Friday, December 20, 2024. She was born March 3, 1973 to Douglas and Shirley McKean in Schenectady, NY. She moved with her parents to Springfield when she was three years old.

Laurel was a graduate of Kickapoo High School and the University of Missouri-Rolla. Laurel was a professional engineer (P.E.) and spent 28 years working for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). She had many roles at MoDOT and was proud of her state-wide contributions. Her final role was Assistant District Engineer for the Southwest District.

In addition to being an excellent engineer, she was also a talented musician. She played saxophone, percussion, and piano for Wesley Methodist Church and several community bands. She also sang in the church choir. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling. She was a friend to animals and adopted many shelter pets during her life. She will be remembered for her courage and quiet strength during her cancer battle.

Survivors include her mother Shirley, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. She was proceeded in death by her father and grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Wesley Method Church, Southwest District Employee Fund, Watching Over Whiskers, or Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.

A memorial service will be held at the Wesley Methodist Church, 922 W. Republic Road at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 4, 2025. Memories and words of support may be left for the family at Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
