Obituary

Wanda Joy (Wise) Linduff died peacefully in her home in Bolivar, Missouri on August 9, 2022. Joy was born on January 20, 1933, in Harjo, Oklahoma to William Dewey Wise and Eva Frances (Vestal) Wise. Joy was the apple of her parents' eye and enjoyed a wonderful childhood in Harjo. Her maternal grandparents, John and Ethel Vestal, lived across the street and her paternal grandparents, Mack and Martha Wise, lived next door. Joy's childhood home was always filled with many cousins and friends. Her sister, Beverly Ann, was born when Joy was 11 years old, and Joy picked out Bev's name. The two sisters were lifelong best friends, and their families enjoy a special relationship to this day. Joy played softball and basketball for the Harjo Hornets. Joy credited her love of basketball and her high school basketball coach, Mr. Wise (no relation), with getting her through high school. After graduating from Harjo High School, Joy worked for Sylvania Electric in Shawnee, Oklahoma for two years where she started out making $0.90 per hour before getting a big raise to $1.10 per hour.

In 1953, Joy met Harry Albert Linduff. Joy and Harry dated for 17 days before Harry went to the Air Force basic training. After basic training and two days of kitchen duty, Harry proposed to Joy. Although Joys' father thought she had gone crazy, Joy married Harry on July 22, 1953, in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. The couple welcomed four children, Bill, Jackie, Kathy, and Randy, over the next several years. Joy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived in eight different states as she and Harry moved around the country in the Air Force, Harry's career with the American Cancer Society, and retirement. Wherever she lived, Joy made her house a home, practicing her gift for hospitality by hosting events, preparing elaborate meals (Christmas brunch is a fond memory for all), and loving her family excellently.

Joy became a Christian at the age of 26 when her friend Jack Hoskins' father, Reverend D.B. Hoskins, presented the plan of salvation to her and she accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. Since the miracle of her salvation, Joy served faithfully in churches across the country. She served in nursery ministries, meal ministries, Vacation Bible Schools, and many other behind-the-scenes church ministries. Joy was blessed by the ministry of many faithful pastors throughout her life including Louis Markwood, Richard Wright, Steve Deighton and Chad McDonald.

Joy and Harry enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage before Harry's death on March 11, 2013. The couple had many adventures, traveling to 48 of the 50 states, taking trips to Hawaii, the Super Bowl, Canada, and many more. Joy and Harry were devoted grandparents who, in retirement, often traversed the country to attend their grandchildren's sporting events, church events, or graduations. Joy was known for letting referees and umpires know when they made a bad call! Joy and Harry's financial generosity was well-known to all their family and friends. Although Joy never had an opportunity to attend college, she and Harry's financial support allowed all of their grandchildren to obtain college degrees.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, her sister Beverly, and her daughter Kathy. Joy is survived by her son Bill and daughter-in-law Janet of Kansas City, Kansas, her daughter Jacklyn Wright and son-in-law Richard of Bolivar, Missouri, her son Randy and daughter-in-law Penny of Shawnee, Kansas, six grandchildren Nathan (Amanda) Wright, Ryan (Brooklyn) Linduff, Angela (Rashaad) Brown-Peterson, Jonathan Wright, Holly (Tavis) Hackathorn, Harrison (Halie) Linduff, and 10 great-grandchildren.
