Obituary

Joy Asperger was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She left this world peacefully on March 1, 2021.

She was born to John Robert Fortune II and Wylma (Rose) Fortune on December 29, 1937 and was the eldest of four children. After graduating from high school, she attended Eastern Michigan University where she met her husband, Robert "Bob" G. Asperger. Bob and Joy married on July 1, 1961. Together they had one son, Robert G. Asperger II.

Joy loved connecting with family and friends. Joy definitely had the gift of gab and she used that gift to stay in touch with many through weekly phone calls. She also used her love of connecting with people as a teacher. A teacher of her son, grandsons, nieces, and nephews about art, history, music, gardening, and cooking but also as a special education teacher. Joy loved to celebrate her student's accomplishments both big and small.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; son and daughter in law, Robert and Sarah; grandsons, Robert and Steven; siblings, Nancy Laramie and Rob Fortune; and many other beloved family.

A celebration of Joy's life is being planned for a future date. Joy so loved watching various shows on PBS that in lieu of flowers the family is suggesting you consider making a memorial donation to the national Public Broadcasting Foundation.
