John L. Thoms
December 6, 1942 – January 26, 2022

John L. Thoms, 79, of Springfield, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.

Born on December 6, 1942, in Sioux City to Dorothy and John J. Thoms, John was raised with strong values that shaped the way he lived his life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and nothing meant more to him than his family.

John shared many years of love and commitment with his wife, Julia Thoms. Together they built a life grounded in loyalty, laughter, and dedication to their children. He was the proud father of Valorie Webb (preceded in death) and her husband, Joseph C. Webb (preceded in death); Julia Adams and her husband Donovan; Lela Thoms; and John D. Thoms.

He was a proud grandfather to Cara McConnell; Tyler Webb (preceded in death); Jonathan Vernon and his wife Jordan; Jacob Thoms; Destiny Tripp; James Torre; Mackenzie Vernon; Kaiden Tripp; and August Torre. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and close friends who will miss him dearly.

John was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Lela Martin (Monk), who held a special place in his heart.

He had a lifelong love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the freedom of the open road. But more than anything, he loved sitting with his grandchildren, sharing stories from his life. Whether the stories were funny, heartfelt, or somewhere in between, he had a way of capturing their attention and making each moment special. Those memories will be treasured forever.

John will be remembered for his steady presence, his strength, and the deep, unwavering love he had for his family. Though he is no longer with them, the stories he told, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Thoms, children, and grandchildren.
