Jessie W. Barnett September 26, 1937 – June 27, 2025

Jessie W. Barnett, 88, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on June 27, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. She was born on September 26, 1937, to Violet Nichols and Truman Walton in Springfield.

From an early age, Jessie was an independent fighter. At just three years old, she developed polio and received treatment at St. Louis Shriners Hospital. She wore braces for a time but eventually learned to walk without them—a testament to her strength and determination.

Jessie graduated from Central High School in Springfield in 1955. A gifted musician, she played the cello in both her high school symphony and later in college while attending Southwest Missouri State University.

On September 8, 1962, Jessie married the love of her life, Joe E. Barnett. The couple spent 25 years living in Alaska before returning to Missouri in 1996.

Though Jessie and Joe did not have children, they poured their love into their dogs, treating them as cherished members of their family. Jessie was known for her strong work ethic and never let her disability slow her down—she worked throughout her life with resilience and grace.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Barnett; her parents, Truman Walton and Violet Marsh; and her sister, Wilma Unger.

Jessie is survived by several cousins and dear friends who will miss her greatly.

A Graveside Service will be held at the Missouri National Veterans Cemetery. Date and time pending.
