IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jerry
Wilkes
June 17, 1933 – November 17, 2024
Jerry Wilkes passed away on Sunday, November 17th in Lee's Summit, Missouri at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Esther Wilkes, and his brother, Berl Wilkes. He is survived by his wife, Penny, of 69 years, sons Tom Wilkes (Vicky) and Terry (Kathy), 4 grandchildren, Paul (Heather), Rachel (Justin), Marcus (JoJo), and Harrison, and 6 great grandchildren, Parker, Sawyer, Riley, Addie, Cohen, and Kamden.
Jerry was born in 1933 in Jamestown, MO. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy in 1952 and served in active duty and the reserves until 1959. While in the Navy, Jerry met Penny on a blind date, and they were married in November of 1954. Jerry was a great provider for his family, at times working several jobs to support his wife and children. In 1957 he began employment at the United States Post Office, where he worked 35 years until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, Jerry was a custodian at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he and Penny were members.
Jerry and Penny enjoyed their retirement years, going on cruises, being with their friends, and loving their children and grandchildren. Jerry was a big fan of the Missouri Tigers sports teams, and he also loved cars. In their garage he had many pictures of old cars hanging on the walls. Jerry also liked to tinker around the house and work on various projects while he was physically able to do so. The family will always remember the great Christmas gatherings that we enjoyed and his famous Christmas breakfasts.
All of us will be grateful for the example he set as a faithful and loving husband and a father who provided well for his family. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
