IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George
Steinmann
April 18, 1950 – December 4, 2023
George Albert Steinmann was born April 18, 1950, in Keokuk, Iowa to John Frederick and Livinia Adeline (Willis) Steinmann and departed this life on December 4, 2023, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 73. He was the youngest of five siblings Margaret (Steinmann) Willis, John Frederick "Fritz" Steinmann, Magdalena "Schatzi" (Steinmann) McMillen, and Mary (Steinmann) Rowe.
He grew up in Kahoka, Missouri where he graduated from Clark County High School in 1968. While in high school, he was a member of the basketball, baseball, and track teams. He also played guitar and sang in a rock band called "The Rooks" with his friends Robert Lapsley, Randy Arnold, and Michael Rainbolt, where his signature vocals were the "high part" on The Beach Boys "Fun, Fun, Fun". While in Air Force ROTC, he earned a baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1972. His degree contributed heavily to one of the things he was most known for - the ability to "fix anything that was broken" from toys to appliances to equipment to go-carts to musical instruments.
After his college graduation, he first worked in Harrisonville, Missouri for Anaconda Wire and Cable Company and then returned to Kahoka to work at the Kahoka Cheese Factory and, with his brother Fritz, became owner/operators of the company founded by their father in 1936. For almost 50 years, the Kahoka Cheese Factory was a source of employment for the small town and a support for local dairy farms with their large purchases of milk. After the closing of the Cheese Factory, he worked for Dadant and Sons, Inc. in Kahoka for over 20 years.
On August 21, 1971, he married Deborah Kay Hodges also of Kahoka, Missouri at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka and together they raised three children, Erica Marie, Andrew "Andy" Albert, and Melanie "Mel" Kay. He is remembered by his children for giving "triple packers" (carrying all three of his kids to bed at the same time) and for sitting in a chair or on the floor in the hallway outside their bedrooms with his guitar and singing songs while they fell asleep. They were active members of Cedar Grove Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Keokuk, Iowa before moving to Springfield, Missouri and joining Second Baptist Church of Springfield.
In retirement, he married Arada "Rada" Lynn Thompson on October 20, 2006, and together they traveled in their RV visiting friends and family around the country and participating in relief efforts after hurricanes and tornadoes with church groups. They split their time between Springfield, Missouri in the summer months and Wilcox, Arizona in the winter. He continued to play the guitar and sometimes harmonica at church and other similar events for his entire life. He was also known for his "sidekick", a talking plush puppet named Amos, who told Bible stories to children. His stated desire during his final year of life was to "finish well".
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings; his daughter, Mel; and three step-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Rada of Springfield, Missouri; his daughter, Erica of Pittsboro, North Carolina; his son, Andy of Joplin, Missouri; a stepson, Robert "Rob" of Springfield, Missouri; a stepdaughter, Julie of Springfield, Missouri; a stepson, Brian of Nixa, Missouri; two grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. His ashes will be scattered on his wife's family property in Wilcox, Arizona.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services.
