Donald Oscar Dowler, 94, resident of the Mt. Vernon Veterans Home, passed away from natural causes July 14, 2015 in Springfield, Missouri. Don was born April 16, 1921 in Birch Tree, Missouri, the firstborn son of Lawrence and Nellie (McKinney) Dowler. He was later joined by his brothers Dow, Lou, and Robert. After school Don joined the Conservation Corp and was responsible for planting thousands of pine trees in many of our National Forests. When he received his draft notice, he began a twenty year career in the U.S. Army. He was a highly decorated veteran of World War II in his role as tank sergeant in the Second Armored Division. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery in securing the radio from his disabled tank while under direct fire in order to prevent enemy forces from capturing it and intercepting critical communications among the U.S. Tank Division. He continued commanding the remaining operational tanks in order for them to destroy the enemy position. Don's last duty station was Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. This is where he met his wife Lottie Frances "Fran" Rickels. They married August 16, 1963. They spent many years in Alaska raising a blended family of children, keeping everyone busy camping, hunting, fishing, and participating in sports activities. After retiring from active duty, Don continued his career with the Civil Service at Ft. Wainwright. After the children were grown, Don and Fran moved to Fair Play, Missouri in 1977. They spent many years enjoying their home in the rolling hills and fishing in nearby Lake Stockton. Don recently received his fifty year pin for participation in the Masonic Lodge. Don is survived by Fran, his loving and devoted wife of 52 years; his children, Margaret Howe, Lotti Goodwin, John (Dianne) Giuchici, Pete Giuchici, Jay (Carla) Dowler, Mary Giuchici, Jess (Mickey) Dowler, and Angela (Dale) Dowler; 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and his brother, Dow Dowler. Don was predeceased by his daughter, Shirley Wheaten; parents; and his brothers, Lou Dowler and Robert Dowler. A service including recognition by the Masonic Lodge and U.S. Army Honor Guard will be held Monday July 20, 2015 at 3 pm, in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Arrangements have been made by Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mercy Hospital for their care and compassion. Thanks also go to Ron Blackwell for his skill and knowledge in making the final arrangements easier for everyone involved. Gone fishing in another stream...
