IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David
Wingo
July 20, 2025 – December 11, 2025
David R. Wingo, born 20 July 1935, died 11 December 2025 after a fall in the home. David is survived by his children: Randolph and Janice (Robinson) Wingo of Rogersville MO, Robin Wingo and Bill Anderson of Madison Lake MN, and Micah (Wingo) of Rogersville MO; four grandchildren: Thomas Gilmore of Springfield MO, Andrew Wingo of Rogersville MO, Sarah Wingo-Story and Hayden Story of Columbia GA, and Mary Wingo and Tim Price of Springfield MO; and two great-grandchildren: Annabelle Wingo and Eli Wingo, Springfield MO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice K. (Rogers) Wingo, 2024, and son-in-law Glenn Gilmore, 2025.
David earned his IBEW union card when he was 20 years old. His career as an electrician included working on many businesses in Springfield MO. Some of his more "reckless feats of ingenuity" included riding a swing seat into the powerplant stacks to set insets (all went well until he dropped the drill); he climbed the KWTO tower (without a safety line) to change a lamp; on one occasion, in a church, he strapped and wired two ladders together to reach a cathedral height repair (while Harry B. provided ballast by standing on the lowest rung); and riding a crane ball (the crane was on a barge anchored in the river) to reach the top of a power plant stack. Other worksites, as an apprentice, journeyman, or foreman, included the federal medical center, Ash Grove Quarry (where his father, J.D. Wingo, was the plant electrician), grocery stores, colleges, banks, hotels, Springfield Leader and Press, Fort Leonard Wood, and the list goes on. On any job site, his primary concern was for the well-being of his brothers and providing quality learning opportunities for apprentices. Ultimately, he retired while working at French's. In 2025, David was recognized as the most senior member of IBEW Local 453 where he had been affiliated for 70 years. His contributions to the Local included acting as secretary for one term, advocating for vacation pay and an annuity program.
David enjoyed sunning on the beach and collecting shells, antiquing, travel, woodworking, reading, attending concerts and plays, and of course, spending time with friends and family. His vow to "never be cold again" was achieved when he and Alice bought a home in Bradenton, Florida where they enjoyed many happy years with very good friends.
He will be missed and remembered as a man who could fix nearly anything, developed a sense of humor as he aged, and as an active member of his Florida community. He will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.
A memorial is planned for Spring 2026. David will be laid to rest in Smith Cemetery, Rogersville, MO, next to his wife of 69 years and 19 days, Alice K. (Rogers) Wingo.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Midwest Cremation and Funeral Services of Springfield, MO.
