IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Corban
Caldwell
May 14, 1980 – August 13, 2023
Corban Eugene Caldwell, 43, left this world too soon on August 13th, 2023.
Corban was born in Springfield, Missouri to Luke and Kay Caldwell on May 14, 1980. He and his sister, Shonda, grew up in Strafford, Missouri with a large, close-knit extended family nearby. Corban spent much of his childhood running around outdoors with his cousins. He also loved spending time with his maternal grandparents, and riding the semi with his grandpa, Leroy.
Corban loved music all of his life, particularly playing guitar, and he was part of choir and jazz band at Strafford High School. His friends remember that he enjoyed playing and singing for anyone, unprompted.
Corban played football in high school, and he played semi-pro for the Springfield Rifles, as well. He was an avid outdoorsman, and he loved all things related to the outdoors - hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and especially spending time in the mountains. He was a dedicated, lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Corban was never afraid of taking risks. He loved motorcycles, tattoos, and he was a self-taught snowboarder. During his time in Washington State, he went snowboarding every chance he got, even following a full night's work.
Corban and Lisa were married on July 7, 2001. Then they began their higher education adventures that led them through homes in eight different states. In each new location they made new treasured friends and new treasured memories. Both Corban and Lisa worked with teachers, colleagues, and mentors who helped them to pursue their dreams and further their careers.
Corban and Lisa had two canine companions (Zeus and Zoe) and, in 2012, they became parents to Caegan, the first of their five beautiful children. Corban described parenthood as eventful, exciting, and "sometimes scary but also amazing." He was extremely proud of all of his children, and he loved each of them dearly.
The kids loved to cuddle and wrestle with their dad. They had great fun having him push them on the tire swing, getting treats (especially ice cream) together, and making S'mores in the fire pit at home. They often stopped by Corban's favorite coffee shop in Clawson, MI. They watched movies together with everyone piled on Corban's lap and they listened to music together often, usually while riding in Daddy's vehicle. Corban taught his children science in fun ways and the kids have fond memories of singing "The Bone Song" with him.
Corban attended college at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, and later at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. He went on to complete his master's degree in biomedical sciences, as well. In 2016 the family relocated to Alabama for Corban to attend medical school at Edward-Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)-Auburn. He loved learning, focused intensely on his studies, and remained determined to achieve his lifelong goal of becoming an emergency medicine physician.
In May of 2020 Corban graduated from medical school and, though the ceremony was cancelled due to the pandemic, his family celebrated his achievement together. In June that same year the family moved to Michigan for Corban to begin his residency in Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospital-Farmington Hills.
Corban did not hesitate or waver in his dedication to emergency medicine, even during the challenging, early days of the pandemic. Rather, he dove headfirst into an assortment of medical rotations, and he worked extremely hard throughout the entirety of his residency program.
Most recently Corban was working at Beaumont as Associate Chief Resident in Emergency Medicine, where his coworkers spoke highly of his work as well as his friendly and outgoing personality. Friends and coworkers described Corban as "larger than life." They say they will remember him for his infectious smile and laugh, his ability to light up a room, and his confidence (even stubbornness). One friend from childhood said that Corban was truly "a force of nature."
Corban is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leroy and Helen Fisher, of Strafford, Missouri.
He is survived by his parents, Luke and Kay Caldwell of Strafford; his sister, Shonda (Vestal), her husband, Danny, and their three children, Jackson, Macie and Josie; and his wife of 22 years, Lisa Caldwell, as well as their five beloved children: Caegan, Leighalla, Torin, Auden, and Declan; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He will be sorely missed by those who loved him, and he will be held dear in the memories of so many people whose lives he impacted, both as a person and also a physician.
Services will be held at Henderson Baptist Church in Rogersville, MO on Thursday, August 24th, at 4pm. In honor of Corban, please wear cool colors (green, purple, and blue) to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Dr. Corban Caldwell, to Foundations of Emergency Medicine (FoEM), an organization set up to educate and support residents in their long, arduous journeys to become attending physicians. Thank you.
