Obituary

Chancy Darrell Van Pelt, 90, of Springfield, MO passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024. He was born on September 7, 1933, to Chancy and Goldie in Codell, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chancy and Goldie Van Pelt; his sister, Gloria Clark; brother-in-law, Veryln Clark; sister, Bonnie Jensen; brother-in-law, Stan Jensen; and brother-in-law, Duane Scholl.

Chancy served in the Army and is a Korean War Veteran. As an honor for his service to our country, he was able to go on Honor Flight of the Ozarks in 2018. Chancy worked in higher education at Colorado School of Mines and New Mexico State University before moving to Springfield, Missouri as Director of Activities at Southwest Missouri State University. He then moved on to resort manager for Treasure Lake Resort and Treasure Resort in Branson, Missouri. He finished his working career as a security officer at Highland Springs Country Club in Springfield, MO. His work ethic was one of great character, he was a man of his word with great integrity in which he went above and beyond his job requirements.

Chancy had a great love of the outdoors and for fishing. You would usually find him either out landing a big fish on the lake or tending to his vegetable garden and flowers. His boisterous personality would always greet you with a firm handshake. Chancy was one who did not know a stranger and had a way of making you feel welcome. His smile and grand chuckle of a laugh could light up a room. Along with his big personality, was a fierce love for his family. He made sure to always let them know how much they were loved and to never give up in life. Chancy delighted in taking them fishing, attending their sporting events, and watching them grow into adults. He had a way of always making them smile!

Chancy is survived by his sister, Pat Scholl; son, Jeff Van Pelt and wife Susie; daughters, Stacey Van Pelt, and Nicole Hemingway and husband Jason; grandchildren, Josh, Landon, and Mariah Van Pelt, and Jonah Hemingway; great-granddaughter, Nora Van Pelt; and many nieces and nephews.
